City manager provides context for expected state property tax estimates

Decorah property owners should receive annual budget statements from the state of Iowa in their mailboxes by the end of next week, but the property tax information in the report may be skewed, according to Decorah City Manager Travis Goedken.

The city of Decorah’s future sports complex was awarded $377,000 this week from Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s water quality initiative. The project is due to begin construction this spring along Old Stage Road just past Walmart.

The Decorah City Council is still undecided on whether to remodel or raze and rebuild the facility which serves as Decorah’s Fire and Police Station as well as its city hall. City staff have said the building was constructed almost seven decades ago and is in need of numerous costly repairs and renovations to bring the facility up to code.

Outdated, failing water meters to be replaced citywide

New water meters for all Decorah residences and businesses are expected to be installed by mid-fall this year, as the city is weeks away from finalizing the project’s budget and funding. New high-tech meters will replace antiquated ones, which city staff hopes will all but eliminate water loss and provide more accurate water bills for residents.
