Medal-worthy performances by Viking girls; Simon second at 145 pounds

A stellar wrestling season wrapped up for girls around the state last weekend in Coralville, including five Vikings with one in the finals.
Heading into the big meet, Decorah was looking to defend its state title; however, the Vikes would come up short of a trophy, finishing third with 74 points. East Buchanan tallied 105 points to win the Class 1A title, followed by Mount Vernon and Osage.

A different venue was the backdrop for the Decorah boys basketball team (17-1, 7-0 NEIC) Saturday as the Vikings played Winterset (4-15) at Wells Fargo Arena, earning the 58-46 win over the Huskies.

Relay team headed to state swim meet

They are headed to state.
The Decorah boys swim team will have one event representing it at this weekend’s state meet in Iowa City. The state meet is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15 at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City.

It wasn’t the finish to the season she dreamed of, but South Winn’s Maddy Jansen was just one of nearly 450 girls to reach the state meet last week, which is an accomplishment of its own.

The South Winn basketball team (17-5, 12-4 UIC) closed out the regular portion of the season Monday, winning its last five games and finishing third in the Upper Iowa Conference.

A big third quarter with a stronger defensive fourth gave the South Winn girls basketball team (9-12, 8-8 UIC) a victory in the final regular season game Friday, knocking off Central Elkader (9-13, 7-9 UIC) at home 35-28.

Trojan girls win share of UIC title

The Turkey Valley girls basketball team had plenty to celebrate last week.
There was the victory Tuesday over their arch-rivals. There was Bella Stika’s school-record 26 rebounds in that 39-36 win over South Winneshiek. There was the 68-13 Senior Night victory over West Central on Friday. There was Kee High’s 38-28 win over MFL MarMac the same night that gave the Trojans a share of the Upper Iowa Conference title.
